Rosemary also called scientifically as Rosmarinus Officinalis belongs to the Laminaceae – mint family. The extract is obtained from rosemary leaves. Demand for natural and pure substances including pure essential oils has been growing. Rosemary extract in its purest form is obtained by the SCFE Co2 extraction method. The name rosemary is derived from the Latin word ‘Ros’ and ‘marinus’ meaning dew of the sea. In Greek it is termed as ‘anthos’ also which means flower. Carolus Linnaeus a taxonomist and naturalist from the 18th century named this genus.

Rosemary extract has anti tumor, anti inflammatory and anti cancer properties. It is rich in anti inflammatory and antioxidant compounds. It is enriched with nutrients like carbohydrates, energy, sugars, protein, calcium, iron, phosphorus, magnesium, riboflavin, thiamin, vitamin B, B6, B12, C, zinc, sodium, potassium, niacin, folate, carnosic acid, rosemarinic acid and caffeic acid.

In aromatherapy it is used as a decongestant and inhalant.

If consumed in large quantities it can lead to adverse reactions like pulmonary edema, vomiting, spasm or even coma. Rosemary extract is used by some women for causing abortions and for increasing menstrual flow. In perfumes and soaps, it is used as a fragrant component and also in some beverages.


If rosemary extract is taken in low doses, it can be really safe. Some of the side effects which rarely trigger are coma, vomiting and spasms. Miscarriage could be caused due to high dosage.
